Can a Quick Marketing Review Really Make a Difference?
Many of my customers return each year for a Marketing Review session. While it is often described as a review, in practice it becomes something more valuable. It creates space to pause; step back and properly reassess what is actually happening within a business’s marketing.
Marketing does not stand still. New tools, platforms, and capabilities are constantly being introduced, and a year is an exceptionally long time in online marketing. What worked twelve months ago may no longer be as effective, and in some cases may even be working against you.
From Theory to Reality
Recently, I completed one of these sessions. We spent two hours reviewing analytics to identify opportunities, assessing email performance, checking search engine setup, refining social media activity and pressure testing the strategy for the year ahead. It was not about introducing anything radically new, but about making what is already in place work better.
It is easy for this to sound quite generic. Improving performance, refining strategy, identifying opportunities. All sensible, but not always easy to visualise in practice.
The reality is far more practical and specific. A recent client, Sue Read Art, described the value far better than I can.
“Having a Marketing Refresher was very valuable. Elliot took the time to really consider my needs and offered clear, concise advice with practical solutions. The result is a website that feels fresher and more up to date, allowing me to focus more of my time on my work in the studio.
Reviewing the analytics has given me greater focus, and I feel more confident moving forward in the current economic climate.
It was also useful to discuss the impact of AI while still retaining a human element. I now have a clear plan for my social media and mailing list to help bring more people to my website.
Elliot is friendly and approachable, and he considers all aspects of an online presence in a cohesive and workable way, bringing thoughtful new ideas. I would highly recommend a Marketing Refresher session.”
When Performance Does Not Match Expectation
In another recent case, a business could not understand why sales had fallen after launching a new website in 2025. On the surface, the situation did not make sense. Traffic had increased, the site was new, and everything appeared to be an improvement.
Looking at the data told a different story.
The review focused entirely on analytics, comparing before and after data in detail. What became clear was that the new website had shifted away from communicating service, expertise, and bundled solutions, towards a more product led approach. At the same time, the nature of the traffic had changed. Although there were more visitors, their intent was different. There were more visitors, but fewer of the right ones.
The business now has a clear, data led understanding of what has changed and why performance has been affected. That clarity allows them to move forward with confidence, making informed adjustments rather than relying on assumption.
Why These Reviews Matter
A Marketing Review serves two distinct purposes. It provides a structured way to step back and assess whether a marketing strategy is still fit for purpose for the next twelve months, and it also acts as a diagnostic process to identify and understand specific issues.
In some cases, it is about refining and strengthening what is already working. In others, it is about uncovering what has quietly changed beneath the surface.
Either way, a relatively small amount of focused time, grounded in real data and practical experience, can bring clarity, direction, and confidence. That alone can be enough to influence the future direction of a business.
