Migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify

"I valued Elliot’s responsiveness, patience, and willingness to guide us through every stage of the website build. The regular Zoom meetings and clear communication made the whole process straight forward and stress-free. The new website gives us a professional online presence that better represents our business and supports future growth. We now have a platform that is easier to manage and more effective for attracting and engaging customers.

I would highly recommend Business Think, which combines strong technical expertise with excellent customer support, taking the time to ensure everything is understood and delivered to a high standard. It has been a pleasure working with Elliot, and I will be continuing working with him to grow our online presence."

The Challenge

I was introduced to Chris and Phil at Bearing Supplies in Norwich by Ben Clanford at MidasNet, someone I have worked with for more than twenty years receiving hosting support. Knowing the scale of the challenge ahead, Ben felt I was well placed to help.

Bearing Supplies had recently invested in a WordPress and WooCommerce website to sell more than 45,000 bearing products online. Although the site was live, it quickly became apparent that the platform was too restrictive for the business. Routine updates required developer involvement, product management was becoming increasingly difficult, and the team recognised that the website would not support their long-term ambitions.

After spending several months researching Shopify, Chris and Phil decided they needed specialist support to plan and deliver the migration.

Protecting SEO Investment

Migrating an established e-commerce website is about far more than moving products from one platform to another. The existing website had accumulated search engine visibility, backlinks and customer traffic, all of which needed to be protected.

The first stage of the project involved auditing the existing site and planning the migration strategy. This included preserving search engine rankings, implementing thousands of URL redirects, retaining valuable content, and ensuring that Google and other search platforms recognised the Shopify site as the natural continuation of the existing website rather than an entirely new one.

These technical foundations are often overlooked but are essential. A poorly managed migration can cause dramatic losses in search visibility and online sales. By planning the migration carefully, Bearing Supplies was able to minimise that risk.

Delivering Advanced Product Search

One of the client's most important requirements was a powerful search experience. Customers often need to find bearings using combinations of dimensions and technical specifications rather than simple product names.

Shopify's native search could not provide the level of filtering required. To solve this, an advanced search solution was implemented using Shopify Metafields combined with AI-enhanced search technology.

Each product was enriched with structured technical data, including dimensions, country of origin and other key attributes, allowing customers to quickly locate the exact products they needed. This improved both the customer experience and the likelihood of converting searches into sales.
